Review Chapter 3: Gestation New world orders and the Second World War, 1921–45

In this chapter telling the future of superpowers nation.
the years following 1921 have often been thought
of as a period of isolation. In fact, isolation was by no means complete on either
side: indeed, each had a concept of world order including itself but tending to
exclude the other. At a time when old rules of international relations had been
broken and new rules scarcely devised, let alone established, there was certainly
much concern among the other powers about the global roles to be played in
international relations by both USA and USSR, as more new world orders were
proclaimed to confront older empires. Italy from 1922, Japan from 1931 and
Germany from 1933 all put forward plans for expansion threatening to upset, in a
more violent manner than either the USA or USSR, the pre-war status quo which
Britain and France in particular strove to maintain.
The Second World War (1939–45)
On 3 September 1939, both Great Britain and France declared war on Germany.
While the USSR fought against Finland in the Winter War of 1939–40, a lull of
‘phoney war’ followed the fall of Poland in the West until Blitzkrieg quickly
subdued France in June 1940. Then, Hitler turned his attention to the east, broke
his non-aggression pact with Stalin without warning, and launched Operation
Barbarossa on 22 June 1941. Future US President Harry S. Truman observed
that, while he did not wish to see Hitler victorious under any circumstances, he
also considered that the USA should promote stalemate by supporting whichever
side appeared to be losing. There was no doubt about that in the short run, as
Blitzkrieg seemed to be heading for another early victory. However, without any
great sympathy for the Soviet Union, there were those in the USA who were
profoundly alarmed as Hitler pronounced his crusade against ‘Jewish bolshevism’
From universal revolution to new realism
In broad parallel with economic developments in the period 1921–45, cultural
developments may also be described in three chronological subdivisions:
‘universal revolution’ in the 1920s, followed by two successive phases of a new
realism, during the 1930s and then throughout the war years.

CHAPTER 2 Imperial showdown (1898–1914)

Imperial showdown (1898–1914)
Having considered the structure of the inheritance, we turn to the great
conjuncture of conception. C ertainly, we should not car ry our basic metaphor too
far, and we would not extract much enlightenment from speculating about
parentage, even though serious scholars have discussed the femininity of Russia
and the masculinity of the USA.1 In any case, in Chapter 1 we have given a
considerable amount of attention to the manner in which Europe made a
contribution to the political, economic and cultural development of both the USA
and Russia. And so, we would be better off noting simply that it was during the
period 1898–1921 that the ideological foundations of superpower, Wilsonism and
Leninism, were laid against a background of war and revolution.
The First World War and proletarian revolution
(1914–21)
The well-known observation of Karl von Clausewitz that ‘War is nothing more
than the continuation of politics by other means’ gained unprecedented
justification from the events of 1914–21, the years of the First World War, the
Russian Revolution and the consequent Civil War.
Imperialism: the highest stage of capitalism?
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the world’s population amounted to
something over 1600 millions, scarcely more than a quarter of some recent
estimates for the end of the century, with the last decades seeing the steepest rise.
In 1900, more than half of humankind was to be found in Asia, a formidable
‘Yellow Peril’ for those who saw ‘Orientals’ as people apart.
The spread of liberalism
In 1913, James Bryce, author of The American Commonwealth and many other
books, set out a global liberal vision. He observed that the whole world was
governed by active minorities who originated ideas and compelled the attention
of the multitude.
Challenges to liberalism
War and revolution made a tremendous impact in cultural life as in political and
economic life. In the USA, the minimum of governmental control over individual
enterprise, which had been an important tradition, was at least temporarily
overthrown, while advertisement on a grand scale was used for governmental

propaganda.

CHAPTER 1 Inheritance: nations and empires, before 1898

Inheritance: nations and empires, before 1898
There were two superpowers in the twentieth century: the USA and the USSR. At
the beginning of the next century, from most points of view, there appears to be
only one, the USA. In the future, there may be others: China seems a prime
candidate. And in the past, before the superpowers, there were the ‘great
powers’, mainly the European empires but including both the USA and the USSR’s
predecessor, Tsarist Russia. Already in 1835, in a famous prediction, Alexis de
Tocqueville talked of them as ‘two great nations’ apparently tending towards the
same end, if starting from different points, each of which seemed to be ‘called by
some secret design of Providence one day to hold in its hands the destinies of half
the world’. As we shall soon see, we have to go far further back than 1835 in order
to understand the origins of the two twentieth century superpowers.
Geography and history (before 1492)
If, as was often alleged during the years of the Cold War, the twentieth-century
struggle was indeed one between godless Communism and Christian democracy,
there could be little doubt that the Almighty weighted the scales in favour of his
principal adherents and against his chief adversaries when he arranged the basic
conditions of the USA and the USSR.
Early modern colonisation (1492–1776)
Certainly, these voyages bring us to another phase in our search for the origins of
the ‘two great nations’. Russia was ‘discovered’ in 1553, and in a manner recalling
the more famous ‘discovery’ of America in 1492.
Democratic revolution (1776–1815)
The American Revolution was a consequence of a crisis of empire. From 1754 to
1763, Great Britain fought France for domination in North America and elsewere
‘Two great nations’ (1815–56)
During the years before and after Alexis de Tocqueville’s famous prediction of the
future superpowers as ‘two great nations’ predestined to share world domination,
the American people went forth and multiplied. In what seemed no time at all,
the USA acquired vast lands to the west of the Mississippi, at the expense of
Spain, Russia and Great Britain and, above all, of Mexicans and other Native
Americans.
Two great empires (1856–98)
Both future superpowers suffered the experience of war on their own soil early in
the second half of the nineteenth century. Russia was invaded again little more
than forty years after Napoleon had reached Moscow. On this occasion, hostilities

from 1854–6 were confined mostly to the Black Sea and the Crimea.

The Culture Difference of American and Indonesian in Education (in General)

Introduction
Education is an important thing that we have to consider because without education our country will never be developed. In this case our attitude toward education is very crucial because our attitude will determine what we get from that very education.

Culture influences people’s attitude toward education. In this paper we will give the differences in attitude between American and Indonesian. There are many differences in attitude between American and Indonesian. For example, Americans give respect to others; critically analyze something, independent students, close relationship between peers and no tolerance for plagiarism, cheating which are contrasts to Indonesian. There is an Indonesian proverb which says ‘satu lidi tidak akan dapat digunakan untuk menyapu, namun sekumpulan lidi dapat membersihkan halaman’.

The first one is about give respect to others. In learning process in America, if someone is speaking, the audience must pay attention to the speaker. If they don’t, it will be considered as impolite and rude. By paying attention to others will make learning process running well. This situation usually doesn’t happen in Indonesia. Indonesian usually speaks while the others are speaking. Even if they do pay attention, that is because that student who is speaking has good score.

The second one is critically analyzing a material or topic in the class. American prefer critically analyze than memorizing the material. This atmosphere of learning can be done because their teacher is not dominating the class. Thus, this kind of atmosphere will trigger the students to be independent. Independent means that the students dominate the class, not the teacher and they have prepared the material beforehand. If the teacher doesn’t come, the students will search the material and study by themselves

The last one is the Americans don’t tolerate plagiarism, cheating in the test and come late to the class in America. Unfortunately, it becomes a common thing in our country. Whereas a lot of losses that we will get from them. Plagiarism bored the students’ creativity. Cheating makes them dependency on something outside himself, inhibits and even kills the potential for progress, injustice among the clever with the lazy students, and deceive ourselves, others, and teachers. Coming late to class can disturb others students and indicate as a lazy students.

Several points discussed above are brief explanation about educational attitude which takes place in America and Indonesia. Here we will give further explanation about educational attitudes in America and Indonesia:

Diversity In Education
v  In United States

There is considerable variety in classrooms for each university in the United States. No two courses are identical. It is caused teaching methods and curricula are diverse. There are considerable different between undergraduate and graduated courses. In the classroom is expensive for it atmosphere, private universities may differ from that in community college. Although more costly, private universities ogled by people capable as private universities generally have the image of bourgeois and elite. About quality, there may be little difference, but not too significant. Whereas, community college university which are free and open to everyone.

v  In Indonesia

Indonesia’s education system has distinctive features, namely the majors since high school are science and social. And unfortunately, prestige science stream is better than social. But still, the Indonesian education system does not respect the students themselves because this system. Students is a wildcard,a novice who has not obtained a job and allocates the skill point. With their majors, then turn right school students to choose what they like.

Generally, teaching method and curricula in schools or universities are same each other. Government has been decided teaching method and curricula which have to use by all of teacher in every school and universities. It usually changes after a year or more than. It is being used by almost of education system in each college. Although not all of them has same facilities and situations. Every region has diversity to face each problem especially educational.

Besides that, In Indonesian, private universities are generally not very well known, unless it had great names or that have a high level of achievement. Most of people prefer the public universities because the cost is cheaper than private. When it comes to quality, private universities in Indonesian generally have little problems. The perceptions that private universities have less quality than public universities. However all of them are same. It depends to teaching method in the class. How the teachers do something to make their students have good qualities.

Active Participants
v  In United States

Participation in the classroom is not only accepted but also expected of the student in many courses. Some professors base part of the final grade on the student’s oral participation. Although there are formal lectures during which the students has a passive role. Many courses are organized around classroom discussions, student questions, and informal lectures. In graduate seminars the professor has a”managerial” role the students make presentations and lead discussions. The students do the actual teaching in these seminars.

Some professors prefer to control discussion while others prefer to guide the class without dominating it. Students who make assertions that contradict the professor’s point of view should be prepared to substantiate their positions.

v  In Indonesia

There are many students in a classroom. The teachers have difference way how to teach and apply their subject for their students. For example they make presentations and discussions. They divided into some groups which have to able had pat the material of their subject. But, just a few of they can do it. It also when they work together to done their assignments with the members of their groups. Just some member that try to do it, another only hope to them. So they do not understand about their material.

When discussion in the classroom, there are so many student that join to it. But to be the active participant they still less interest. Almost of them just be good listener. Although the teachers have been give chance to their student to give questions or comment. But the students do not use the chance. Moreover if the teacher does not write their name in the paper when they asking or comment. They just want use the chance if the teacher will give good score to them.

The Teacher-Student Relationship
v  In United States

Many instructors believe that an informal, relaxed classroom environment is conducive to learning and innovation. The casual professors are not necessarily a poor one and still respected by students. Although students may be in a subordinate position, some professors treat them as equals.

Professors may establish social relationships with students outside of the classroom, but in the classrooms they maintain the instructor’s role. They have several roles in relation to students; they may be counselors and friends as well as teachers. Students must realize that when a teacher’s role changes, they must appropriately adapt their behavior and attitude.

v  In Indonesia

There are many schools or universities in Indonesia. It means, almost of societies are teachers and students. They usually have same places. But they have different work. Relationship between them should good. But, some students have bad thing that they do to their teachers. They do not realize that their parents ask to them in learning knowledge. Sometimes the students also not obey to teacher’s rule. They only want get good score without study hard. They dissatisfied if their teachers give bad scores to them.

Teacher and student have to make relationship not only in the class room, but also out of class room. When in the class teacher will explain about the subject and the student accept it as knowledge for them. Even out class room the relationship of teachers and students may be like as friendship. They can be sharing about their experience each other. It can make the relation will better than just only in the classrooms. But, this matter seldom will see in Indonesian. Both of them only make a relationship which related about subject and academy in school or universities.

Besides that, the students also less appreciate to their teacher. Sometimes their teacher put down as their friends without see the situation around them. They feel if their teacher is people who just needed to appreciate when they are in the classroom. But, when outside of the classroom they not do it. So, the relationships of them have to be good relationship and still need to increase time by time.

Independent Learning
v  In United States

The ideal students are considered to be one who is motivated to learn for the sake of learning, not the one interested only in getting high grades. Sometimes homework is returned with brief written comments but without a grade. Even if a grade is not given, the students are responsible for learning the material assigned.

When research assigned, the professor expects the students to take the initiative and to complete the assignment with minimal guidance. They will help students who need it, but prefer that their students not be overly dependent on them. They also have other duties besides teaching. In addition, they may be obliged to publish articles and books. Therefore the time that a professor can spend with a student outside of class is limited.

v  In Indonesia

The education system in Indonesia is too stressed to the theory. Indeed, the school or universities have laboratories, but not always used. Academically, they are good, but once ordered to do practice, they are desperate. When their teacher or lecturer give assignment to them, some students try to done it with cheat to their friends. They often do it by their self. Whereas their teacher has been ask to them for work it by them without have to cheat or plagiarizing. But they still have not self-confidence to try it by their self. It means their skill in learning will not increase. They also less in reading education books. They prefer read novel or magazines about their idols than read new information about their subject.

The teachers less attention or care to their students in learning independent. They just give assignment to them and less control if their students cheating with their friends’ assignments. Some teachers only control what their students has collect their assignment or not. They just thumb through. Seldom of them who see into millstone. So that is way the quality of people that job still very wistfully.

The students also less attention to increase their knowledge. They just study and find in their school or universities. They try to find new things if they were given assignments by their teacher. It just make them want to get high score without improve their knowledge. Whereas it was given as one of medium to improve their skill and knowledge in specific subjects.

The Honor System
v  In United States

The “honor system “imposed by the teacher and the university, demands that the student be honest in all areas of school work. Many students are also aware that they can jeopardize their rapport with fellow students if they are dishonest. Students who cheat may lose the respect of other students, particularly these who study for exam and work independently.

v  In Indonesia

Cheating on test and plagiarizing in written work is a behavior that Indonesian students usually do in their study process. These skullduggeries have been viewed as usual behavior for almost of the students in Indonesian. They do not have a little guilt in their self. Education cavities sidehas been try to give socialization process for students that their acts only make loss to their self and their environment. Teachers and lecturers also always warn off do it to their students every teaching process. Various rules have been making too that related these culture. But, the applications of it still less. It caused just a few of students that realize about that, almost of them all the better choose this culture to get good score.

In addition, the “honor system“ is usually something that does not have strictly enforced rules teaching its students. In Indonesian, it has meaning for each teachers or students.Honor system is usually made in the first meeting lecturer and students. It make as agree and disagree between them. But it only obeys by the students just a moment. After many meeting also of them began to forget and forget it.

Competition
v  In United States

Relationship between students in the classroom can be cooperative or competitive. Therefore, in classes where such a grading “curve” is used, students may be reluctant to share lecture notes or information for fear that their own grades will suffer. Another reason for the presence of competition among students. A high grade point average is needed for entrance to superior graduate schools. Students feel pressure to achieve high grade when there are relatively few openings in graduate programs. Ultimately, it is the students who are responsible for succeeding in this competitive system.

v  In  Indonesia

Almost not has main purpose for education system to make strength it position in prepare to compete the quality of human resources. Almost cannot see too the real work to repaired learning process, research, and try to build power for make competition with foreign education.

Faster learning process also viewed as a lucky to education system which then born new business is acceleration class. Until now it has impact that still is controversial. For education business person in finishing study early than other with product quickest graduated viewed as be able to get result that are bigger than conventional method. It is because circulation of student as consumer between passes and new be faster until profit also followed automatically.

Besides that, Relationships between students in the classroom tend to bandwagon. Indonesian students also should be able cooperative or competitive. But, almost of them just want to graduated earlier than others. They do not care the quality of their education. Although the real competition in job is not only have graduated, but also has real competence in their self. However the education in Indonesian has make this rule, but there are still not has good quality which get good job. It caused almost of people here only want their families can work together. So, the competition in Indonesia is still not making reality, yet.

The Best Relationship Advice From “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus”

In the world of self-help books, very few titles can compare to the popularity of John Gray’s Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus.
When this title was first published in 1992, it not only helped educate countless men and women from around the globe, but it managed to nestle it’s way into popular culture and become an instant classic.
Despite the fun and catchy title, this book actually tackles a very serious relationship in many male/female relationships today: a lack of effective communication.
Instead of focusing blame on one person or one gender, this book dives into some of the inherent differences between the way males and females communicate.
Communication is one of the most important factors in finding the right balance in a long term relationship.
Based on the concept that men and women are living on different “planets,” this book helps to not only highlight these differences for the opposing gender, but to offer solutions on how both men and women can meet in the middle to have better, more productive communication strategies.
Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus is a great read for any man or woman, whether they are in a relationship, have been in a difficult relationship in the past, or if they want to be in a successful relationship in the future.
Any person interested in improving their relationship strategies, or looking for relationship advice general, should read through his entire book.
However, for those looking for some of the key takeaways, this article proves some of the best lessons on effective communication from John Gray’s book.

Men And Women Feel Love Very Differently
In Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, there is a big emphasis placed on love — after all it is a relationship advice book.
One of the biggest takeaways about love from the book actually has nothing to do with talking — it is all about showing. This is one of the biggest keys to keeping the love alive in long-term relationships.
This is a very important lesson throughout Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, as communication isn’t always about talking or telling someone something, it is often about showing them or using non-verbal communication in order to get your message across.
According to Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, men will give and give until they are pleased with what they have done. This can be with emotions, money, effort, work, or physical objects. However, women will typically give with the hope that the man will return the gesture.
This is where a lot of disconnect can happen.
Both the man and the woman may feel as though they are doing everything they can to show their love and that they are giving love the way they want to receive it. However, the opposing party may not recognize this, and may actually think that their partner isn’t showing love at all.
This is one tip that both men and women should keep in the back of their minds as they continue to take John Gray’s relationship advice, as many communication disconnects actually stem from this one major issue.
If both parties can understand that the other partner simply has a different interpretation of what it means to show and give love, they can move forward.
And on top of all of this, everyone has a different love language.
When Women Are More Direct, Communication Can Improve
There are so many little things that men and women can both do in order to improve their communication lines, yet one of the classic disconnects between these two genders often comes when women are not as direct with men while communicating.
There is an old story about men and women communicating that perfectly depicts how this lack of directness can cause misunderstandings.
A man and a woman are driving down the street. The woman points at the ice cream store and says “look! The ice cream store is open.” The man says “yes, it is,” and keeps driving. Later that evening, the woman is upset and asks “why didn’t you stop for ice cream when I asked?” The man is confused and says, “I never heard you ask to stop for ice cream.”
It is a rather small, and rather inconsequential example, but it is one that many people in male/female relationships can relate to.
Both parties thought they said and heard different things in the same conversation. This is one of the reasons why communication tends to be more effective when women are more direct.
According to John Gray, if a woman wants to go do something with a man, she shouldn’t just ask him what he wants to do. She should, instead, tell him what she wants to do, and then ask him to join.
Also, she should ask if he would like to go do this thing that she wants to do, for her. Like, as a date. Because, if she doesn’t specify this, the man can easily say, “no, I don’t really feel like going to an Opera.”
For example,  This is an example of direct communication that doesn’t blur the lines and allows both parties to communicate more clearly.
With this example, John Gray goes on to suggest the following scenario:
  • The woman gives the man three options of what she wants to do on a date, a week in advance.
  • The man gets to decide, but doesn’t tell the woman until the date happens.
  • This allows the woman to anticipate the date all week, while the man gets to feel as though he made a decision, while still receiving clear communication on what types of dates the woman wanted to go on.
It may sound like a lot of work, but the key is to start with direct communication on the woman’s part. It can open up new doorways to successful interaction that both parties may have never thought were possible.
Men And Women Have Different Emotional Processes
Emotions have a great deal to do with how we communicate. Emotions can entice us to say certain things, hold different things in, or even respond in ways we may have never thought we would. Emotions can also change our body language and the way we give off signals to one another, even when we don’t realize we are doing it.
Women’s emotions go up and down and have really high-highs and really low-lows. In general, women’s emotions tend to fluctuate more than men’s do.
Men tend to be a bit more steady with their emotions, which can be both positive and negative. While they may not have as deep of a dive into depression, they may also not experience as high of a high when they are happy.
One of the many areas this impacts has to do with “alone time.” Men are much more prone to want alone time when they are feeling emotions that cause them to feel scared or uncomfortable. Men need to be left alone for a while, where they feel safe, and it shouldn’t be seen as something negative by their woman partner. It scientifically helps them to build up their testosterone and think more clearly. If given the time to retreat to his safe space, a man will come out of this alone time once he has handled the problem internally.
A woman, on the other hand, may feel better by talking it out and may not understand why her male partner wants to spend time alone processing the issue.
Allowing women and men to process emotions in a way that is comfortable and natural to them is an essential component to keeping communications lines free and open.
Understanding Your Partner Is A Great Way To Show Appreciation
So much of Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus is about the differences between men and women, but there is one big similarity between men and women in relationships—showing understanding is key.
Men and women are different. They are different physically, biologically, emotionally, almost in every way. Yet, the reason so many of these relationships can work out in the end is because these differences provide a balance. You just need to find that balance.
If you take the time to really get to understand your partner, it can go a long way in helping them feel loved, valued, and appreciated. Men and women are different, and it is important to accept and understand this. You may be speaking different languages, but if you take the time to really talk to your partner and attempt to understand the place they are coming from it can speak volumes.
Take the time to do things like ask questions, put yourself in the other person’s shoes, or even read relationship advice books, like Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, to show the other person that you want to understand them better because you appreciate who they are and that you want to communicate more clearly. It can help restore energy in your romantic relationship so that you and your partner can continue to keep your relationship as healthy as possible.
